In Japan, he won Third Prize at the International Tokyo Piano Competition, and in 2019 he was selected as a finalist of the prestigious Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition. He was also selected for the “Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists,” organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, a governmental scholarship program under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Deren Wang is currently pursuing the Konzertexamen, the highest performance degree, at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar under Prof. Christian-Wilm Müller, where he also serves as an assistant teacher in the piano department. His artistic development was strongly shaped by his long-term studies with Prof. Grigory Gruzman, with whom he studied continuously from the preparatory program through his undergraduate and graduate studies in Weimar. From 2017 to 2018, he studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Prof. Naum Grubert on a full scholarship. He has also received important artistic guidance from Hideyo Harada, a distinguished pupil of the legendary Russian pianist Viktor Merzhanov, connecting him to the Russian piano tradition.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Deren Wang has performed widely across Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Croatia, appearing with orchestras such as the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga. He frequently collaborates in two-piano and piano duet repertoire with pianist Alina Bercu, and in chamber music with cellist Alexey Stadler. His repertoire spans the central piano literature while also embracing rarely performed works, including compositions by Messiaen, Taneyev, and Fauré.
Praised for his structural clarity, expressive depth, and nuanced tone, Deren Wang continues to develop a broad repertoire while performing internationally as both soloist and chamber musician.
